My work has appeared in a variety of venues, from scholarly journals to popular magazines to blogs. Whatever the context, I strive to promote humane interpretations of the past, a common feeling with historical actors based on fair and accessible renderings of their ideas. I do not see my writing advancing a particular political agenda (“activist scholarship,” etc.), but hope to ennoble readers and enlarge their capacity for civic engagement. Critics have described my style as “clear, polished, forceful, succinct, and free of jargon,” “broad-minded in its intellectual orientation,” and “impressively original in its perspective.”
