Graffiti in 19th Century Schoolbooks

Part of my work on school vandalism includes an analysis of children’s markings (“marginalia”)┬áin nineteenth-century schoolbooks. The following photographs, dating from 1800 to 1880, were taken with the permission of the American Antiquarian Society. When viewed together, they comprise an interesting range of artistic styles and offer evocative insight into the mentality of children over a century ago.
